Syrian troops are said to be still holding hundreds of people in a stadium in the city of Latakia after a prolonged assault on the port.

State run television showed locals cheering the troops but the UN is expected to refer the government's crackdown on pro-democracy protesters to the International Criminal Court.

Latakia holds significance for President Bashar-al Assad whose family and friends control its finances and whose father is buried in a village nearby.
