Two Iranian warships are expected to pass through Egypt's Suez Canal for the first time since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Iranian state TV reported Saturday.

The report said that authorities in Egypt, which is still in a state of transition after the popular uprising that ousted President Hosni Mubarak, have already granted the necessary permits.

The two warships are the frigate Alvand, reportedly armed with torpedoes and anti-ship missiles, and theKharg, a supply vessel with 250 personnel on board that is capable of carrying three helicopters.
