Iran's President Announces New Success in Uranium Enrichment

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Thursday that Iran has produced its first batch of uranium enriched to the purity level of 20%, and rejected the West's accusation that Iran seeks to build a nuclear bomb.

"We have produced the first stock of 20 percent enriched uranium at the Natanz enrichment facility," Ahmadinejad told a large and fervent crowd of people in Tehran's Azadi Square.

Millions of Iranians in Tehran and other cities across the country staged massive rallies to mark the 31st anniversary of the victory of the Islamic Revolution on Thursday.

In Tehran, demonstrators then congregated at the Azadi Square, Tehran's main square and the site of major national rallies over the past three decades.

President Ahmadinejad added that the nuclear program will remain under the full supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), adding that the country has the capability to enrich uranium to levels higher than 20 percent.

The Iranian President then rejected the West's allegations about the Iranian peaceful program, stressing that an atomic bomb is impossible under UN supervision.

"Nuclear bombs will be built by those who are not signatories to the [nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty] NPT," he went on saying.

"We do not seek nuclear weapons. We are brave enough to admit it," Ahmadinejad stated.

Washington and its Western allies accuse Iran of trying to develop nuclear weapons under the cover of a civilian nuclear program, while they have never presented any corroborative evidence to substantiate their allegations. Iran denies the charges and insists that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.

Tehran stresses that the country has always pursued a civilian path to provide power to the growing number of Iranian population, whose fossil fuel would eventually run dry.

Salehi Confirms Iran's New Success in Uranium Enrichment

TEHRAN (FNA)- Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali Akbar Salehi confirmed President Ahmadinejad's announcement of production of the first batch of uranium enriched to the purity level of 20%.

Addressing a rally marking the 31st anniversary of the Islamic Revolution in Tehran's Azadi Square on Thursday, Ahmadinejad had said that "We have produced the first batch of 20 percent enriched uranium at the Natanz enrichment facility".

Salehi confirmed the announcement later in the day, and added that the process has the capacity to produce an estimated amount of three to five kilograms of 20% enriched uranium per month.

Earlier on Tuesday, Salehi had stressed Iran's ability to enrich uranium to the purity level of 20% and produce nuclear fuel for its Tehran research reactor, saying that the enriched uranium will be converted into fuel plates.

Responding to the remarks made by French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner, who had viewed Iran's announcement about its plan for producing 20% enriched uranium as "a political bluff", Salehi said, "After enriching uranium to the purity level of 20%, we will turn it into fuel plates at Isfahan facilities, so they (the West) should wait and see if we can do it or not."
