Feltman, Shapiro in Beirut Soon to Stress U.S. Support for Lebanese Sovereignty

Middle East experts Jeffrey Feltman of the State Department and Daniel Shapiro of the National Security Council will soon visit Beirut to reiterate U.S. backing for Lebanon's sovereignty and independence, An Nahar daily reported Wednesday.

The newspaper said Feltman, the acting assistant secretary of state for Middle East affairs, and Shapiro, a senior official from the White House, will meet with President Michel Suleiman, Premier Fouad Saniora and Mustaqbal Movement leader Saad Hariri.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced that the United States will send the two envoys to Syria for "preliminary conversations." They are currently traveling with Clinton, and will leave for Damascus when the secretary leaves Israel on Wednesday.

It was not clear when the officials will visit Lebanon.

An Nahar said Feltman and Shapiro will also stress, during their meetings with the Lebanese officials, U.S. support for the Lebanese army and the need to hold transparent parliamentary elections.
