Murr: Egypt unconditionally supports Lebanese army Murr reiterates Egypt’s unconditional support for Lebanese army Defense Minister Elias Al-Murr reiterated Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak’s position that Egypt supported the Lebanese army unconditionally because it was the only guarantor of stability and peace in Lebanon, and had a crucial security role to play in the upcoming parliamentary elections. After meeting with Arab League Ambassador Amr Moussa in Cairo on Thursday, Murr said that it was his first visit to the Arab League’s headquarters. Asked whether the Special Tribunal on Lebanon would affect Lebanon’s relations with Syria and stability in Lebanon, Murr replied, “The Tribunal is international, not Lebanese,” and Lebanon and all the concerned countries would respect any decision issued by the Special Tribunal. Murr said that the question of whether the tribunal would affect Damascus was an implicit accusation, before the International Independent Investigation Committee released the results of the investigation, but he had added that Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad had declared that any Syrian person who was proven guilty would be tried. -NOW Staff
After the meeting, Murr said Mubarak supported the Lebanese cabinet and that Egypt’s support for the Lebanese army was unconditional. Army Commander General Jean Kahwaji and a military delegation are scheduled to visit Egypt in the next three weeks to discuss Lebanese and the Egyptian defense cooperation, and what equipment Egypt could supply to the Lebanese army, Murr added. -NOW Staff |
