Tuesday News Briefs from Yalibnan.com
Published: Tuesday, 27 January, 2009 @ 4:05 PM in Beirut

Beirut - The focus in Lebanon today will again be the Lebanese Syrian relations following Tuesday's announcement by Lebanese Foreign Minister Fawzi Salloukh of the approval by Syria of the nomination of Michel el-Khoury as Lebanon's first ever ambassador to Damascus.

"I have received a letter from Syria's interim charge d'affaires in Beirut indicating that Syrian authorities have agreed to Khoury's nomination as Lebanese ambassador to Syria," Salloukh told reporters on Tuesday

Salloukh said Syria has not yet submitted the name of its candidate as ambassador to Lebanon.

Khoury, 59, has held several diplomatic posts in several countries including Britain, Brazil, and Mexico and Cyprus where he is the current ambassador

Syria and Lebanon in October formally established diplomatic ties for the first time since both became independent 60 years ago.

The agreement turned a page in relations between Lebanon and Syria, which dominated its smaller neighbor for nearly three decades until it withdrew its troops out in April 2005, but continued to exert influence in the country through its Hezbollah -led allies

The withdrawal came two months after the assassination in Beirut of Lebanon's former premier Rafik Hariri on Feb 14 , 2005 . Damascus was widely blamed for Hariri's murder but has denied any involvement.

The International Tribunal which will try the killers of Hariri will become fully operational on March 1, 2009, but Syrian president Bashar al Assad has already hinted that he will not cooperate with the tribunal. Yesterday he said " The Syrian citizen is subjected to the laws of the country only ."

In other developments , it appears Change is on its way in Washington. "My job to the Muslim world is to communicate that the Americans are not your enemy," Obama said in an interview with Al-Arabiya, the Dubai-based satellite television network. "We sometimes make mistakes. We have not been perfect." He added

Obama said the United States will start by listening, not dictating, and then a response will be formulated after consultations with all the major parties involved.
