Hizbullah Insists on Violence to Regain Land Hizbullah threatens to 'liberate' Sheba Farms, Ghajar Oct. 3, 2008 JPost.com Staff , THE JERUSALEM POST Hizbullah's military commander in Southern Lebanon threatened that the group would "liberate" the Sheba Farma and the Lebanese side of the Ghajar village. During a speech Thursday night in the southern Lebanese village of Abasiyah, Sheikh Nabil Kaouk said Israel only understood the language of strength and that the group believed it was its national duty to complete what it had achieved over the last two years. He said Lebanon could only "retake" its lands using armed struggle, since diplomacy had hit a dead end. Ghajar straddles the Israeli-Lebanese border. Because of that, the village is often exploited by drug smugglers and terrorists. The speech follows Israel's notification of the United States on Sunday that it was prepared to withdraw from the northern part of Ghajar on the Lebanese border, after the Lebanese government delivered written assurances that the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) would be given security and civilian control over the northern part of the village, which is in Lebanese territory. About two weeks ago Israel gave an official letter to UNIFIL commander General Claudio Graziano, stating that it accepts UN security and civilian control over the northern part of the village. The Planning Branch and the Northern Command of the Israel Defense Forces are working on details of the withdrawal. |
