LONDON — Iran and Syria will be jointly trained on a new Russian-origin air defense system.

Industry sources said Russia has delivered simulators for the Pantsyr-S1E surface-to-air missile system. The sources said Russian technicians would employ the simulators for individual and joint training in Iran and Syria.

"Both countries want to quickly deploy Pantsyr and agreed to some joint training," an industry source said.

In May 2008, Syria received the first shipment of the 96K6 Pantsyr-S1E short-range air defense system. The sources said the shipment included four simulators for the Syrian Air Defense Command for training of Iranian and Syrian operators.

Iran and Syria have ordered the Pantsyr. Under the 2006 order, the two countries requested 50 mobile air defense systems, with all but eight meant to be deployed by Iran.

The Pantsyr-S1E, also known as the SA-22 'Greyhound, was designed by the KBP Instrument Design Bureau and built by the Ulyanovsk Mechanical Plant. The system contains 12 57E6 surface-to-air missiles in four launchers, bolstered by two 2A72 30 mm cannons and 750 ready-use rounds.
