Syria linked to assassination, mounts buildup near Bekaa Valley

NICOSIA — Syria has moved to strengthen its military presence along its western border with Lebanon following the assassination of Hizbullah's Imad Mughniyeh.

Lebanese security sources said the Syrian Army was sending troops and armored vehicles to the Lebanese-Syrian border. The sources said the buildup has been concentrated in the western Bekaa Valley.

"The deployment appears to defensive, to protect the border," a Lebanese source said. "It does not seem to signal an intention to attack Lebanon."

The sources said the Syrian buildup comes amid tension in relations with the Iranian-sponsored Hizbullah. They said Hizbullah has blamed Syria for the assassination of Mughniyeh, Hizbullah's operational chief.

"It is our duty to expose the crimes of the Syrian regime, particularly the killing of Imad Mughniyeh and the deception that accompanied this crime," Maamun Al Homsi, a former Lebanese parliamentarian and Hizbullah operative, said. "Syrian intelligence removed the car in which Mughniyeh was assassinated and completely cleaned up the murder scene to remove all evidence."

In February 2008, Syrian special forces raided targets in the Bekaa Valley, the headquarters of Hizbullah. At least one Lebanese national was injured in a Syrian attack acknowledged by Lebanese authorities. The motive of the Syrian operation was not cited.

Iran has been critical of how Syria handled the investigation of Mughniyeh's death. The Kuwaiti daily Al Rai Al Aam reported on March 24 that Teheran has demanded an explanation of how an assassin broke into Mughniyeh's car and placed a bomb in the most secure area of Damascus.

Al Rai, quoting European intelligence sources, said Syria might have cooperated in the assassination of Mughniyeh as well as a Hamas operative as part of a deal with the United States. The sources said the purported U.S. deal would abandon Western efforts to prosecute senior members of the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad alleged to have been involved in the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri in 2005.

CRNews Analysis

However a source in the Counter Terrorism Office of the WCCR told CR News that the stories about Syrian assassination of Mughniah and alleged rapprochement with the US is in fact a "Syrian propaganda effort to weaken the resolve of the UN court and of the Lebanese public. The Syrian agencies have enough connections and cash to try to disseminate stories around the region about secret US-Syrian entente. This is psychological warfare and we don't lend it credence."
